but it gets old having to read the same accolades page after page)。 It's just a bunch of images, often not very interesting or overused ones。 Note that the book updates Legends up to Horizon (no Fuse, Ash, Valk, etc。) and maps to Olympus (no Storm Point)。The book breaks down as follows: A short forward, each Legend up to Horizon, Weapons, Maps up to Olympus, UI and VFX。 Within each section are concept illustrations, artwork of Legend's equipment/abilities/heirlooms (E。g。, Bangalores gas grenade for smoke and the rolling thunder ordinances), a short few legendary skins for Legends and Weapons, etc。 etc。 And whole sections about badges and such that really aren't explained very much (I had so many unanswered questions for each section)。 There were only a couple banners and more was in here about e。g。, battle pass UIs。 Inexplicable, there is absolutely no mention of the stop motion work done to create the realistic and unique shooting/running/emotes。 Anything to do with animations isn't really discussed/shown。As a collection of Apex Legends art, this falls short。 We don't have all the Legendary skins to date for each Legend, we don't have each of their banners, we don't have all the gun skins, we don't even have all the badges that could be earned and explanations for them。 Instead, we get a couple of drawings/models for each category that are more about being examples than a great resource。 I would have loved to go through all the skins in the game and compare the ones I have and don't have - and appreciate the rarer ones。 This is one aspect where artbooks for E。g。, Legend of Korra or The Art of Ghost of Tsushima excelled: there was so much never before seen work and they were comprehensively done。 This feels sloppy。I can use the first Legend covered, Bangalore, as a good example of what you will find。 The intro image is a reused asset of the loading screen where Bangalore loses her brother Jackson as he falls from the ship。 Her intro paragraph is a lacking two sentences, about fitting her into the world of Titanfall and that since she was written to be a soldier, they kept her hair short to accommodate。 That brief paragraph has the typical Bangalore profile image we see everywhere filling the page。The next page has some concept artwork where she has more hair, some hooded jackets。 Under that is another short few sentences of congratulating Apex employees and when she was announced, "Bangalore was one of the first Legends announced in early 2018。 It was a tremendous team effort to develop a new character art style and include unique abilities that fit well in the Titanfall universe。 The Dev team tirelessly worked on multiple concepts before presenting the best version of Bangalore to our players。 All the efforts were worth it for this awesome game。" It really isn't very informative or interesting。More character sketches follow to her current iteration game models。 Those are followed by her cannisters and ordinance。 Then some legendary skins and an artwork that is interesting and not overused in the game。 More useless text for the skins: "Bangalore's Legendary skins had to fit her character's theme and personality。 Our Art team did a fantastic job of varying themes from her colorful Dia de los Muertos La Catrina skin to the Outland Warrior Tribal Hunter skin。" And that is pretty much it for each Legend and the guns: a couple of reused game assets like load screens, shots of a couple of legendary skins, sketches of their heirlooms and equipment, etc。 It felt like there was nothing here but some pretty pictures that we have really seen far too much。 The load screens are beautiful - but we've seen them so much in game that it is hard to appreciate them any more or want to have to pay money to buy this book in order to see them again。 There wasn't enough insight into the characters and far too much congratulations, self promotion, pats on the back, etc。 Granted, I know Respawn was founded by developers who wanted more appreciation and recognition of what they contributed to their games but a few words of hype go a LOT longer toward achieving the desired applauds than endless repetition of it。 We get it Respawn - your employees are amazing。 Let us read about that process and really show us how good they are。I think what I missed most was a complete design process - a lovely discussion with artists and developers about their thoughts as they went into character creation, design, lore, background。 That would have been the perfect complement to really appreciate Pathfinder's Quest lore book, which was truly incredibly well done。 Sadly, we will have to settle for a lot of reused pictures and too few previously unseen work。 Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher。 。。。more
